Sports & Societies
sports.jpgSport at Magdalen is both massively fun and highly successful. Last year we had major success in the rugby, tennis, and cricket leagues and our mens First VIII stayed Head of the River, whilst the women rowers moved into their highest ever position in the First Division. We also have some of the finest college sports facilities in the University, with our own sports grounds, tennis and squash courts a five minute stroll away through Addisons Walk and two sports cupboards brimming with equipment that is open for anyone to use.

Joining a sports team is a great way to get to know people in college and extend your friendship circles. Some also offer opportunities into activites such as Sports Outreach, a charity in which people volunteer to coach disadvantaged children sports for a couple of hours a week to give them an opportunity that they otherwise would not have.

The college is well-represented by its members at University level in all sorts of sports, from archery to water-polo. In recognition, funds are available from either the JCR or college depending on your level of competition. Current members of college should email the Sports Rep (Philippa Bird) at for more information. The Sports Hardship Fund provides further support for those participating in sport at any level, collegiate or Varsity.
All sorts of sports are represented at college level, and Freshers will have a chance to sign-up for some (or all!) of them at this year’s Freshers Fair on Wednesday of 0th week. If there isn’t a sport represented and you’d like to see it, then there is also a network of support for starting up your own club!

If you don’t quite manage to sign-up to every single sporting activity available at the Freshers Fair, it is quick and easy just to contact the Captains of the sports directly. A list of all sports, and their Captains, is provided below:
