General Meeting, Sunday 1st Week HT06

Minutes for General Meeting, Sunday 1st Week HT06

Committee apologies: Jeniv Shah

Meeting commenced: 8.00pm

Reports:

Ball Committee:

The ball committee are now in a position to repay in full the loan of £2000 received from the JCR earlier in the year. They are very grateful to the JCR for supporting them.

Co-options:

Co-options will take place this Tuesday at the CM. Applications with manifestos must be submitted by midnight on Monday.

Motions:

CD Jukebox Motion

This JCR notes:

- Music is cool in the bar

- Crap music is not cool in the bar

- Even though we don’t own the juke box, we are only too happy to use the remote control rather than paying, whenever we get the chance.

This JCR believes that:

- It
is not unfair for the guy who owns the machine to say that if we want new CD’s, we should pay for them.

- New CD’s would make the bar a better place to be and therefore improve our college lives.

- Six CD’s would only cost around £75.

This JCR proposes:

- Mandate the Food and Fac rep to conduct a survey of the JCR to find the six most popular albums.

- Mandate the Food and Fac rep to purchase said albums and get them in the juke box.

Proposed: Iain Anstess
Seconded: Andrew Hobson

Proposition:

There’s a remote control behind the bar which allows music to be played from the jukebox without anyone having to pay; everyone prefers doing this than paying. This means that the jukebox isn’t making any money for the man who owns it, and so he won’t buy us any new CD’s. If we want new music, we should buy our own CD’s.

SFQs:

  • Is there any more pizza?

    • No. Go away.

  • Could we just copy CD’s we already have so we don’t have to pay for new ones?

    • That’s illegal. The new licensing laws cover entertainment and music, so if there was an inspection and we were found to be using copied CD’s, we could be prosecuted and even lose our licence.

  • Will the JCR still own the CD’s once they’ve been put in the jukebox?

    • Yes.

  • How will we decide which CD’s to buy?

    • The Food and Fac rep will sort that out: he’ll probably conduct a survey.

Opposition:

Proposed Amendment:

  • The JCR like to support independent music and so should buy the CD’s from Polar Bear on the Cowley Road. This would save money.

  • Amendment rejected.

  • Vote:

  • For – 8

  • Against – 19

  • Abstentions – 11

Amendment fails.

No further debate.

Vote on motion:

  • For – 36

  • Against – 0

  • Abstentions – 2

Motion passes.

Armchair Motion

This JCR Notes that:

- Our arm chairs in the JCR are great.

- Some of these arm chairs are getting a bit tired.

- This JCR notes that each chair is very valuable (about £3000 each)

- It would cost £500 a chair to recover them.

This JCR believes that:

- It would be great to get the armchairs recovered.

- It would be a massive financial burden on a single year to have all 16 recovered in one go.

- It would be far more wise to introduce a rolling program where the 3 worst chairs are recovered each year.

This JCR resolves to:

- Mandate the food and fac officer to choose the 3 worst seats.

- Mandate the food and fac officer to get said seats recovered.

Proposed: Iain Anstess
Seconded: Big Phil

Proposition:

The chairs that we have are all handmade and so are very expensive. Because of this, college won’t let us sell them and get new ones, but they’re looking a bit tatty. Since repairs are expensive, doing three chairs a year seems sensible.

SFQs:
  • Is this going to be binding for future years?

    • If they don’t like the scheme, they can always bring it to a GM and have it changed.

  • Couldn’t we do something better with the money?

    • No.

  • Wasn’t this motion already passed last year?

    • It was discussed at a committee meeting but was never followed through.

  • If we only do three chairs a year, surely some will always be rubbish?

    • We’re aiming to reach a point where that’s not true. Once each chair has been recovered, it should last for about eight years before needing to be done again. That’s how long it’s been since the chairs were recovered last.

  • Will college pay for any of it?

  • No; they redecorate the JCR every three years and say that that’s all they’re prepared to do.

  • If the JCR owns the chairs, why can’t we sell them?

    • Because the Home Bursar says so.

  • Can we sell them to college and get new ones for the JCR?

    • College won’t pay us the full value of the chairs, and they don’t have anywhere to put them.

No opposition. Motion passes nem con.
