Accomodation

Magdalen guarantees all undergraduates unshared accommodation for the duration of their course, either within walls or very close to college. Amongst Oxford colleges the quality of the rooms is outstanding with many college rooms being sets with both a bedroom and a living room. There are about 65 ensuite rooms, while all have fridges, free high speed internet and phones with free internal calls. Almost all staircases have kitchens for those who wish to cook for themselves and all rooms are cleaned at least once a week by the lovely ‘scouts’.

Living in college is a fantastic experience and there are two main advantages to living in for the whole of your course. Firstly, it's much less hassle – your first term at university will be busy enough without having to waste time finding a house, dealing with landlords and deciding which people you want as housemates (and which you don’t!). Secondly, it means that you can spend your entire time at university in beautiful old buildings close to the centre of Oxford and with all of your friends and college facilities right on your doorstep. Because everyone lives in college there is a great sense of community and you’ll always find people you know at hall or in the JCR.

Rent is not ridiculously cheap - a little above the Oxford College average, but it shouldn’t cost you any more than living out and you should certainly never find yourself in any financial trouble.  Finance should never put anyone of applying to Magdalen as the college (being one of the wealthier Oxford institutions) has an excellent safety net of support funds to help you with your student finances (see the Finance section for more info). Better still, we have a flat rate rent system. So you will never be unable to choose the room you want just because you don't have the cash. The list below gives a rough idea of the types of rooms available to you during your time at Magdalen.

1st Year

  • Waynflete: A modern building across the bridge from college with a great friendly atmosphere. About two thirds of the first years are housed in the ‘flete. Incredibly sociable and great for making lots of new friends quickly. About 200m from college.
  • High Street Houses: Shared with about 10 other people, very individual, a lot of fun and just across the road from College.

2nd year

  • St Swithuns: Beautiful Victorian Gothic buildings. Very sociable, very comfy and very quirky.
  • Longwall Quad: Attractive old-style quad, opposite the library. Rooms all of a good size and well furnished.  Some rooms are sets.
  • Cloisters Attic: Lovely beamed loft rooms in the original Fifteenth Century college cloisters.  An excellent central location right on top of the JCR, hall and the bar.

3rd Year

  • New Buildings: Not new at all, but Eighteenth century. These are some of the best and most sought-after rooms in Oxford, many over looking the deer park and all with wood panelled walls. These rooms are really big - you could play basketball in some of them!
  • Grove Buildings: Brand new, but in traditional retro-Oxford style. All ensuite rooms, many overlooking the deer park.

Plus, if you have a 4 year course, you can live on site as well (Fourth years choose after the third years but before the second years).
