JCR Rooms:
The JCR has two Common Rooms, both open 24 hrs
a day. Both are fully equipped with huge TVs, Sky, DVD players with surround
sound, newspapers and a free pool table. And if you do decide to do some work, there
are some pretty handy (free) photocopiers.
The JCR is also the venue for the delightfully democratic General
Meetings, Welfare Films and Donuts (see JCR Committee and Welfare sections for
more info).
Shop:
The JCR has its own little corner shop which
sells all of your daily essentials such as bread, milk, cereal, chocolate, paper,
shampoo, aspirin etc. The Shop saves you having to trail up the High Street every
time you want something and is very handy for those times when you realise you
have no milk left for breakfast the next morning.
Wine Shop:
This is a real perk to being at Magdalen, as no
other college has one. Open every evening and run by the JCR, it stocks beer, spirits,
alcopops, mixers, snacks, and (oddly enough) lots and lots of wine. The wine shop
is also home to the JCR DVD lending library, which is completely free. There’s
a stack of films to choose from and each term a few more are added to the
collection. Great if you’re not sure
what to do with your evening.
Bar:
Possibly the best in Oxford, cheaper than the pubs in town and
open practically all day long. The bar
has recently been redecorated and currently displays the winning entries of the
annual college photography competition taken by Magdalen’s own students. It
also sells an alternative to hall food in the shape of salads, pastries, cakes,
jacket potatoes soup, baguettes and paninis. Particularly brilliant in the
summer, when you can sit outside on the riverside terrace to eat. The bar also
has plenty of sources of entertainment - a pool table, a jukebox, table
football, pinball and a multiquiz machine (TIP: if you have a gambling streak,
don't bring too much spare change!). Oh,
and the bar is also home to the sweaty joy of bops, open mic nights, the ever
popular bar quizzes and many other entz events throughout term (see the Entz section
for more on that).
Computers:
Magdalen has two computer rooms, which give all
students access to the Internet and such excitements as Word and Excel. They
also provide scanning and printing facilities, and all college rooms have high
speed internet access.
Hall:
Built in the Fifteenth Century and very
beautiful. Hall is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and caters for
vegetarians. It's pretty cheap (about £2.30 for most meals) and, in comparison
to some other colleges, you don't have to pay for all your meals in hall
whether or not you eat them, nor do you have to sign up in advance. Three times
a week there is Formal Hall - a three-course meal complete with Latin graces
sung by the choir. Completely optional, but at £5-7 very reasonable and great to
invite guests to.
Library:
The Magdalen Library is open 24 hrs a day and
is very well stocked (so well stocked that it is running out of room to put all
the books!). The library is traditionally invaded by finalists during Trinity
term but otherwise there is usually desk space to be found if you fancy working
in some peace and quiet. The librarians
are always happy to order more books if you need them and there are computer
facilities available. There is also an
extensive DVD and video collection available if you can’t find what you’re
looking for in the wine shop.
Grounds:
One of the best things about
Magdalen is that you can go from High Street to countryside in literally a
couple of minutes. Magdalen is by far the most spacious College with over 100
acres of private land within its walls. As well as the beautiful buildings and
lawns of the main college, Magdalen is famous for its deer
park (which provides a tasty treat if
you become a scholar!) and extensive water meadows. We are also only a stone's
throw away from Christchurch Meadow and the flower-packed Botanical Gardens
(the oldest in the country and free entry for members of the university). For
complete escape head for Addison's
Walk, a circular riverside path famous for its outstanding natural beauty,
beyond which are the Fellows’ gardens and the sports grounds.
Our location right on the river is most envied during the summer when
our fleet of punts is floated…
Punts:
Are great fun and we have lots! Many colleges
don't have any. They are brilliant in the summer for wasting more time than
would seem possible, especially at the legendary punts party when the whole
College heads down to the bottom of the meadow for barbeque food, sunshine,
Pimms, beer and bouncy castles...
And as if all that wasn't enough...
Magdalen has its own darkroom, which
the JCR photography rep can teach you how to use. The JCR Dining Room is
another brilliant facility which is used for brunch on a Sunday morning and is
available for anyone to book out. Magdalen is blessed with a huge new
auditorium, for films, plays, debates, concerts, etc. The JCR also has its own
art collection, auctioned off each year. There’s some pretty good stuff in
there and most goes for almost nothing. So, if you fancy a Picasso, or a
Renoir, or a Turner in your room for £10 for a year, this is the place for you.
