Jacari
  www.come.to/jacari

Established over 40 years ago, Jacari volunteers help the children of refugees and asylum seekers to improve their English or tutor them in other subjects. Just one hour a week of your time could help a child realise potential they might otherwise never have known they had. No experience necessary.

Jacari is a home teaching scheme for children in local schools where english is not their first language. Some are refugees or asylum seekers. It is a charity which relies solely on donations.

Students involved in Jacari are assigned a child and visit the childs home (mostly in Cowley) once a week for an hour or so. Tutors help out mainly with english, but sometimes the child may want help in other subjects such as maths.

Students can be studying any subject at Oxford, no previous experience in teaching is necessary, They recieve a booklet of ideas for lessons when they start and Jacari has a library of learning resources which they can borrow for lessons.

There are also entz events each term, both for the teachers and with the children.

Particpants often become good friends with the families and it is a good way of seeing another side of Oxford.
It doesnt take up much time but really makes a difference."
