Bad news first: law at Magdalen is a lot of work, and it’s a lot of pretty hard work at that. However, with that out of the way I can get onto why it’s a fantastic subject to do and why in particular you should want to do it at Magdalen. Not many people get to do law at school so for most of us it is something completely new and different to study at university. After what can seem like hundreds of years at school doing the same subjects this is a refreshing change, an entirely new subject rather than an old one in more detail. Magdalen has really excellent facilities for law, we have a really good new library (just for us!), fantastic tutors and Magdalen itself is an amazing place to study anything.
For Mods (first year exams) you would study criminal law, constitutional law and Roman law all of which are enjoyable in very different ways. I found criminal law particularly interesting as you get to read cases some of which have facts which almost defy belief. At Magdalen you would probably do the three-year course although we do also offer the four-year law with law studies in Europe course which has a year abroad in the third year.
Law at Oxford is basically very rewarding. It’s a fascinating theoretical discipline in and of itself, but it is fundamentally a practical subject and the career prospects are excellent. Magdalen is a wicked place to study law. The college law society (the Atkin society) thrives with many formal and er ‘less formal’ events each year and lawyers are involved in college life at all levels. If you are thinking about applying to Oxford and are looking for a degree which is enjoyable and challenging then I would whole-heartedly recommend law. (And do it at Magdalen, because we have deer)
