Environment

Hi, I'm Sameer, your JCR Environmental Officer for 2010.

This page is designed to provide information about facilities and procedures in College, as well as events going on in schemes and events at Magdalen, as well as keeping you up to date with what is going on at OUSU.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

News

  • Magdalen Fairtrade shopping bags now on sale! This year the price has dropped to just £2.50, so get your orders in quickly.
  • Junk mail opt-out scheme now in place! See posters in the post room for details.

Recycling at Magdalen

For environmentally-friendly waste disposal remember to COMPACT your rubbish before you throw it away. This saves on bin liners and space in landfill. For recyclable rubbish:

  • Batteries, ink cartridges and old mobile phones can be pidged to me for recycling.
  • Tetra paks and other cartons: there is now a box for these outside the JCR, where the boxes for cans used to be.
  • Cans and tins: please put them in the yellow bins provided in  kitchens.
  • Plastic bottles : these can also be put in the yellow bins provided in kitchens.
  • Glass bottles: these can be recycled in the bins on Rose Lane or by the Waynflete. Alternatively, there are recycling bins for clear, green and brown glass around the back of the Tesco Metro on Cowley Road (access through the supermarket or by turning left on the road just past it).
  • Plastic carrier bags can be taken to the JCR Shop to be reused.
  • Paper (including glossy paper) and thin cardboard: please put into the red bin in your room.
  • Thick cardboard: There is a bin for this in the Old Kitchen Yard. Remember to crush it first!

N.B. In the post room, there are two bins, one for recycing and one for general waste. Mysteriously, the green bin is not the recycling bin! The recycling bin is beige. So watch out!

More details to come soon, but please email me if you have a specific query, or else check out www.oxford.gov.uk/environment/recycling-directory.cfm.

Compost

The College is happy for you to collect your own compostable kitchen waste (vegetable peel, tea bags, etc) if you provide your own kitchen compost bin  and empty it regularly yourself. There is a compost heap at Holywell Ford where you can empty it.

Magdalen Cotton Shopping Bags

The cotton shopping bags with the green-themed college crest on the side are on sale again.

They cost just £2.50 each and are a great way to show some love for Magdalen and the environment.

Please email me your orders, stating the quantity that you would like.

The price of the bags will be added to your batells and the bags themselves will be pidged to you within 24 hours.

Saving Energy

  • Remember to switch off lights when leaving a room (including corridor lights, if there is a switch).
  • If a motion detector is not working effectively (for example, the light never turns off) please email the Maintenance team at maintenance@magd.ox.ac.uk. They are happy to help! (They can replace faulty motion detectors with light switches.)
  • If a motion detector keeps going off when the light is not needed (for example, when someone walks past the bathroom/kitchen door), consider limiting the 'vision' of the detector by sticking a piece of cardboard onto the wall to block that side of it. If a box is put over the detector so that you have to wave your hand under it to turn the light on, it basically turns the detector into a switch (except with an energy-saving time lag function).
  • Please keep the JCR Photocopier turned off (not on standby) when not in use.
  • Close your curtains to reduce heat loss from your room, and you won't need to keep your radiators on for so long.

Suggestions

If you have any ideas or suggestions about how to make Magdalen greener, I would love to hear from you.
