Magdalen Ensembles

All of our ensembles are non-auditioning, and are open to singers and instrumentalists from any college. Our mixed choir, the Magdalen Singers (or 'Mingers'), rehearses every Monday evening in the Magdalen Auditorium, and our orchestra rehearses every Tuesday evening in the beautiful Magdalen Antechapel. We also have a college Swing Band, and are always happy to set up more musical groups if there's a demand for them. If you'd like any more information, please get in touch with the Presidents; you can sign up for any of our ensembles at either the OUSU or the Magdalen Freshers' Fair, or simply come along to one of the rehearsals.

Recital Series and Musical Soirées

Our recitals take place every Thursday during term-time at 1.15pm in the Magdalen Auditorium or the Antechapel. Each recital lasts between 30 and 45 minutes. They are informal events and always free to attend - everyone is welcome! Any member of college can put on a solo or ensemble recital; please get in touch with the Presidents if you're interested. For details of upcoming recitals, have a look at our termcard or the MCMS Facebook page.
Each term, MCMS also hosts an informal Musical Soirée, where anyone in college is welcome to play or sing a piece or two. In Michaelmas 2014, we will be hosting this concert on Thursday of 6th Week (20th November). Please get in touch with the Presidents if you'd like to take part.

Jazz and Alternative

MCMS aims to encourage a rich musical life at Magdalen, and we're really keen to develop new initiatives beyond the Classical sphere. In previous years, we've frequently teamed up with Entz to organise jazz and open mic nights in Magdalen's Old Kitchen Bar (OKB). The acts have spanned a wide spectrum of genres, including folk, electric blues, acoustic, rock, jazz, swing, pop, alternative, and musical theatre. After the success of last year's events, we're organising two more Open Mic Nights for Michaelmas 2014: one in Freshers' Week (Friday 10th October) and one in 5th Week (Friday 14th November). The second of these will take place in collaboration with Oxjam, a do-it-yourself charity music festival. If you'd like to be involved in either event, please get in touch with the Presidents.
