Our recitals take place every Thursday during term-time at 1.15pm in the Magdalen Auditorium or the Antechapel. Each recital lasts between 30 and 45 minutes. They are informal events and always free to attend – everyone is welcome! Any member of college may put on a solo or ensemble recital, although the series aims to present the best performers from across Oxford and beyond. Last term, for example, we were delighted to host Aram Yagubyan, prizewinner in the International Bach Competition in Leipzig, 2012. The performers’ list for Michaelmas Term 2013 will be released shortly. In Michaelmas 2013, we will also be hosting an informal evening 'Come and Play' concert where we hope members of college will play or sing a piece or two.
MCMS runs its own orchestra, saxophone ensemble and a non-auditioning, mixed choir, the Magdalen Singers. These ensembles practise and perform in the Magdalen Antechapel or Daubeny Room. They rehearse every week during Michaelmas and Hilary terms in preparation for the end-of-term concerts. Singers and instrumentalists from Magdalen and other colleges are all welcome to join. Please contact the President for more details.
Jazz and Alternative
MCMS is keen to develop new initiatives beyond the Classical sphere. For the last two terms, we have organised a very popular Open Mic Night in the college bar (OKB) in association with the Entz team. The acts spanned a wide spectrum of genres, including folk, electric blues, acoustic, rock, jazz, swing, pop, alternative, music theatre… After the success of these event, we are organising another Open Mic Night in Freshers' Week and 5th week of Michaelmas Term 2013. The provisional date for these events are Friday 11th October and Friday 15th November 2013. If you would like to be involved in this event, please contact the President.
